TLDR GLP-1 therapies can cause hair loss, but hair often regrows after stopping or reducing the drug.
This scoping review systematically mapped cases of alopecia associated with GLP-1–based therapies, such as semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide, and tirzepatide, by examining temporal onset patterns, alopecia phenotypes, and diagnostic confirmation quality. The review included 9 studies, comprising case reports, case series, observational studies, and pharmacovigilance analyses, with data from FAERS capturing 469 alopecia reports. The most common alopecia phenotypes were telogen effluvium, unclassified alopecia, androgenetic alopecia progression, and alopecia areata. Telogen effluvium typically began 10–18 weeks after therapy initiation or dose escalation, while alopecia areata showed earlier or variable onset. Hair regrowth occurred in 40–50% of cases after dose reduction, drug discontinuation, or supportive management.
