TLDR Folliculitis and pseudofolliculitis barbae are common but often overlooked issues in burn survivors, needing better awareness and treatment strategies.
This case study highlights folliculitis barbae (FB) and pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) as underrecognized complications in burn survivors, particularly affecting men with facial and neck burns. The study involved 5 male patients with an average age of 44 years, who developed FB or PFB after sustaining partial- to full-thickness burns. The lack of established diagnostic criteria and treatment protocols for FB and PFB in burn patients is noted. Treatments included topical mupirocin, triamcinolone ointment, laser therapy, and in some cases, skin grafting. Outcomes varied, with some patients responding well to treatment, while others required more extensive interventions. The study emphasizes the need for increased awareness, research, and standardized treatment approaches, suggesting that symptoms may develop after the acute recovery phase as hair regrows. A multidisciplinary approach involving dermatology is recommended for effective management.
