13 Complications of Platelet-Rich Plasma and Microneedling

    January 2021
TLDR PRP and microneedling are generally safe but can cause rare severe complications.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and microneedling were generally well-tolerated procedures with low rates of adverse events, though some severe complications were reported. PRP was used for facial rejuvenation, wound healing, and alopecia treatment, with mild side effects like transient pain, erythema, and bruising. Rare severe complications included systemic allergic reactions and irreversible blindness from periocular injections. Microneedling, used for acne, scars, and alopecia, had side effects such as erythema, pain, and bleeding, with less common issues like lymphadenopathy and acne flare-ups. Complications could often be avoided with proper patient selection, technique, and adherence to clinical practices.
