Modulation of Chemotherapy-Induced Human Hair Follicle Damage by 17-Beta Estradiol and Prednisolone: Potential Stimulators of Normal Hair Regrowth by Dystrophic Catagen Promotion?

    TLDR 17-β estradiol and prednisolone may speed up hair regrowth after chemotherapy.
    The study investigated the effects of 17-β estradiol (E2) and prednisolone (P) on chemotherapy-induced hair follicle damage using a human in vitro model. It found that E2, alone or with P, enhanced the inhibition of hair shaft elongation caused by the chemotherapy agent 4-HC and promoted the dystrophic catagen pathway, leading to premature hair follicle regression. This process was associated with faster hair regrowth despite initial hair loss. The study involved 10-18 hair follicles per group from 50-year-old female patients. While E2/P increased melanin clumping in some cases, it did not consistently affect melanin transfer. The findings suggested that E2 and P could potentially accelerate hair regrowth after chemotherapy by promoting the dystrophic catagen pathway, although further research with more participants was needed to confirm these results.
