5 Alpha - Reductase and Metabolic Syndrome in PCOS Patients

TLDR A higher testosterone/dihydrotestosterone ratio in PCOS patients may indicate worse metabolic health.
The study investigated the relationship between 5 alpha-reductase activity and metabolic syndrome in 70 PCOS patients. It found that the total testosterone/dihydrotestosterone (TT/DHT) ratio was significantly higher in PCOS patients compared to controls, indicating reduced 5 alpha-reductase activity. This higher TT/DHT ratio was associated with worse metabolic profiles in both PCOS patients and healthy women, suggesting that the TT/DHT ratio could be a marker for metabolic risk. The study highlighted the importance of monitoring this ratio in assessing metabolic health in women with PCOS.
