TLDR 5α-Reductase helps regulate hormone action in toad testes, especially during breeding season.
The study investigated the role of the enzyme 5α-reductase (5α-Red) in regulating glucocorticoid (GC) action in the testis of the toad Rhinella arenarum. It was found that 5α-Red activity was localized in the microsomal fraction of testicular cells and played a role in converting testosterone to 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT) and progesterone to 5α-pregnan-3,20 dione. The research suggested that 5α-Red could modulate GC action, which is crucial for understanding the physiological effects of seasonal GC rhythms in amphibians. The study highlighted the importance of 5α-Red in the testicular function of R. arenarum, particularly during the breeding season when GC levels are elevated.
