A Comprehensive Overview on Alopecia Areata with Review on Advances in Genetics and Treatment

    Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder causing sudden, non-scarring hair loss, affecting about 2% of the population. It results from the immune system attacking hair follicles, with genetic predisposition and environmental factors contributing to its onset. The condition leads to hair follicles being arrested in later growth stages, causing premature transition to the catagen or telogen phase and impaired regrowth. While not life-threatening, AA significantly impacts psychological well-being and quality of life. Current treatments, such as corticosteroids, immunotherapy, and emerging biologic therapies, aim to manage symptoms and promote regrowth, but no cure exists. Research is ongoing to better understand the genetic and immunological mechanisms to develop more effective treatments, and support for those affected is essential.
