TLDR Cinnamon may help improve insulin sensitivity in women with PCOS.
This systematic review investigates the potential role of cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.) in improving insulin sensitivity and reducing hyperandrogenism in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Analyzing 32 studies, the review finds that cinnamon may enhance insulin sensitivity by mechanisms such as increasing insulin receptor phosphorylation and upregulating GLUT-4 expression. Clinical studies show modest improvements in fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, and serum insulin levels with cinnamon supplementation. While mechanistic data suggest possible anti-androgenic effects, evidence on direct improvements in testosterone levels is limited. Overall, cinnamon appears to be a promising adjunct therapy for insulin resistance in PCOS, but more large, randomized trials are needed to confirm these findings.
