TLDR Few people stick with topical minoxidil due to side effects, so alternatives and strategies are needed.
The review highlights the issue of low adherence to topical minoxidil for treating androgenetic alopecia, despite its effectiveness. In a study of 400 patients, only 15.5% maintained treatment for six months, with adverse effects such as dermatitis contributing to discontinuation. To improve adherence, strategies like personalized medicine, setting realistic expectations, and using alternative formulations such as nanocarriers and low-alcohol solutions are suggested. Additionally, low-dose oral minoxidil is being explored as a viable alternative, demonstrating similar efficacy to topical forms in a study involving 90 men.
