TLDR Higher DHT levels are linked to more acne in adolescents, especially boys.
The study investigated the prevalence of acne in adolescents and its association with sex, puberty, and androgen levels, using data from 1,609 participants aged 5.6-23.4 years. Acne was more prevalent in late pubertal boys (85%) compared to girls (15%), with boys experiencing acne at a mean age of 15 years. Higher concentrations of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) were found in adolescents with acne, indicating a link between elevated DHT levels and acne presence. The study highlights the significant role of androgens, particularly DHT, in the development of acne during puberty.
