TLDR We need safe, affordable drugs to fight coronaviruses effectively.
The review discussed the urgent need for effective antiviral drugs against coronaviruses due to vaccine limitations and emerging mutations. It covered various antiviral agents, including remdesivir and molnupiravir, with the latter showing benefits in reducing hospitalization in mild COVID-19 cases. Paxlovid showed promise in reducing hospitalizations by 80% in phase 3 trials. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its extracts, such as Artemisinin and Puerarin, demonstrated antiviral effects. Other agents like azithromycin, losartan, and natural antioxidants were explored for their potential against coronaviruses. The review emphasized the importance of developing safe, broad-spectrum antiviral agents and highlighted cocktail therapy as a promising approach.
