TLDR Aesthetic surgery improves body image and mental health, but pre-surgery psychological screening is important to manage expectations.
Aesthetic surgical procedures significantly enhance body image and psychological health in most patients, as evidenced by a study of 86 individuals at Riphah International University Hospital. The study found a notable improvement in psychological health scores post-surgery, with scores rising from 14.2 to 22.8 (p < 0.001). However, patients with high preoperative body image distress, indicated by a Global Severity Index (GSI) ≥ 1.3, were more likely to experience postoperative dissatisfaction, as shown by a strong negative correlation (r = −0.913, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that psychological screening before surgery can help identify patients at risk of dissatisfaction, allowing for better management of expectations and improved outcomes.
