TLDR Afoxolaner effectively treats mange in guinea pigs with one dose.
The study demonstrates that a single oral dose of 2.5 mg/kg afoxolaner (NexGard) is a safe and effective treatment for Trixacarus caviae infestation in guinea pigs. The case involved a 3-year-old female guinea pig with severe dermatological issues, including alopecia and intense pruritus. Following treatment, significant improvement was observed within 1 week, with complete resolution of symptoms and full hair regrowth by 2 months. The study highlights the potential of afoxolaner as a convenient treatment option for ectoparasitic infestations in exotic pets, though further research is needed to evaluate its long-term effects in rodents.
