TLDR Younger women are seen as more attractive and healthier, with Chinese women rated highest and South African women rated oldest and least healthy.
The study investigated age-dependent changes in skin features and perceived facial appearance among 526 women from five ethnic groups: Chinese, Japanese, French, Indian, and South African. It found significant effects of age and ethnicity on perceived age, attractiveness, and health, with younger women generally rated as more attractive and healthier. Chinese women received the highest attractiveness and health ratings, while South African women were rated oldest and least healthy. Skin features such as gloss, tone evenness, and sagging varied across ethnicities, with Indian and South African women showing lower gloss and tone evenness, and higher sagging. Assessor ratings and image-based skin features were predictive of menopausal status, highlighting the influence of age and ethnicity on perceptions of facial appearance and the impact of menopause on skin aging.
