Air pollution significantly impacts skin health by exacerbating inflammatory skin conditions, accelerating skin aging, causing hair loss, and increasing the risk of skin cancer. The harmful effects are primarily due to the formation of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress, with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling pathway playing a key role. Air pollutants also disrupt skin barrier function and trigger inflammation. To counter these effects, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapies, as well as treatments aimed at restoring skin barrier function, are recommended.
