TLDR Aloe vera is effective and safe for skin and hair care.
Aloe vera is recognized for its extensive use in both traditional Unani medicine and modern dermatology due to its diverse biological activities beneficial for skin and hair care. This review combines Unani therapeutic principles with contemporary biomedical research to assess Aloe vera's potential in dermatology and cosmetology. Unani medicine attributes various therapeutic actions to Aloe vera, which align with its scientifically validated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, wound-healing, moisturizing, and barrier-restorative properties. These effects are primarily due to its bioactive compounds like anthraquinones and polysaccharides. Clinical evidence supports Aloe vera's efficacy in treating conditions such as acne, dermatitis, psoriasis, burns, and scalp disorders. Its safety and adaptability in formulations make it a valuable component in topical drug delivery and cosmeceuticals, suggesting that Aloe vera is a promising integrative agent in dermatology, though further standardized clinical research is needed.
