The Association Between Alopecia Areata and Iron Deficiency Anemia: A Large-Scale Population-Based Case-Control Study

    This large-scale population-based case-control study involving 33,401 alopecia areata (AA) patients and 66,802 controls found a significant association between AA and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), with 15% of AA patients having IDA compared to 10% of controls, and an odds ratio of 1.61. IDA was observed to precede AA in 40% of cases, follow AA in 58%, and occur concurrently in 2%. The study suggests that IDA may exacerbate immune dysregulation in AA and highlights the importance of assessing and managing IDA as a treatable comorbidity in AA patients. The findings support incorporating micronutrient profiling into AA management and recommend further research on the benefits of early IDA correction on AA outcomes.
