TLDR Transverse sectioning is more reliable for diagnosing alopecia areata.
The study investigated the correlation between histopathological findings and the hair pull test in alopecia areata (AA) by examining perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrate in both longitudinal and transverse sections. Conducted on 18 AA patients, the study found that transverse sections revealed a significantly higher number of terminal hair follicles with perifollicular infiltrate compared to longitudinal sections. Additionally, the presence of immune infiltrates was positively correlated with a positive hair pull test, suggesting that transverse sectioning may provide more reliable histopathological insights in AA diagnosis.
