TLDR Tick bites can cause hair loss similar to alopecia areata, and baricitinib may help regrow hair.
This document presents a unique case of a 28-year-old woman who experienced diffuse alopecia areata-like hair loss following a tick bite on her scalp. Initially, hair loss was localized to the tick attachment site, but it rapidly spread to the entire scalp. A biopsy revealed features consistent with alopecia areata, including miniaturized hair follicles and lymphocytic infiltrates. The patient was treated with baricitinib, a Janus kinase inhibitor, which led to significant hair regrowth except at the tick attachment site. This case highlights a novel presentation of tick bite alopecia and suggests potential benefits of baricitinib therapy for similar cases.
