TLDR Alopecia areata is linked to PTSD, alcohol use, anxiety, and depression.
The study involving 4,785 patients, including 957 with alopecia areata (AA) and 3,828 controls, found significant associations between AA and psychiatric disorders such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression, as well as lifestyle factors like alcohol use. AA patients had higher odds of PTSD (OR 1.73), depression (OR 1.36), anxiety (OR 1.36), and obesity (OR 1.21), but lower odds of smoking. These findings suggest that individuals with AA may be at increased risk for these conditions, highlighting the need for comprehensive care that includes screening for psychiatric disorders and addressing lifestyle factors in the management of AA.
