What Is Alopecia Areata?

March 2025 in “ Pediatric Dermatology
TLDR Alopecia areata causes round patches of hair loss, especially in children.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition causing hair loss, often in round patches on the scalp, and is common in children. About 1 in 50 people will experience it in their lifetime, with hair regrowth possible over months or years. Diagnosis typically involves visual examination, sometimes requiring a biopsy. Treatments include topical steroids, steroid injections, contact sensitizers, minoxidil, and JAK inhibitors, though not all patients respond. There are three types: alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, and alopecia universalis. Emotional support for affected children is crucial, and they may benefit from support groups and open communication about their condition.
