TLDR Most people with alopecia areata stop treatment within a year.
This retrospective cohort study analyzed treatment patterns for alopecia areata (AA) in 45,483 adults in the US from 2015 to 2020. The study found that corticosteroids were the most commonly used treatment, with 66.4% of patients receiving at least one form of treatment within the first year of diagnosis. Intralesional, topical, intramuscular, and oral corticosteroids were the primary treatments. However, by 12 months post-diagnosis, 71.8% of patients were not receiving any treatment, indicating a significant drop-off in treatment continuation. The study highlights the need for further research to understand why many patients discontinue treatment.
