TLDR Cyclosporin A vesicles effectively regrow hair and reduce inflammation in alopecia areata.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of 0.5% Cyclosporin A (CyA) in a liposomal formulation for treating alopecia areata (AA) using the Dundee Experimental Bald Rat (DEBR) model. Fifteen rats were divided into three groups, each receiving different formulations of CyA. Group I, treated with CyA vesicles and a penetration enhancer, showed visible hair regrowth after one week. Group II, treated with CyA vesicles without the enhancer, showed regrowth by the second week. Both groups reached maximum hair density after six weeks, with reduced inflammation and improved hair follicle morphology. Group III, treated with CyA in ethanol, showed no hair growth or inflammation reduction. The results suggested that CyA vesicle formulations could be promising for topical AA treatment in humans.

Cyclosporine A is discussed as a powerful hair growth stimulant, potentially more effective than minoxidil, but concerns about safety and side effects, including cancer risk, limit its use. The conversation highlights the need for further research and experimentation with topical application, despite its risks.
