TLDR Better documentation of alopecia areata in Black individuals is needed to improve diagnosis.
This study analyzed trichoscopic features in 10 Black patients with alopecia areata (AA) to improve understanding and diagnosis in this population. Common features like vellus hairs, black dots, and tapering hairs were observed, along with novel features such as peripilar hyperpigmentation and follicular hypopigmentation. Despite these observations, no statistical significance was found between trichoscopic features and the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) scores. The study highlights the need for better documentation of AA in Black individuals to aid in diagnosis and reduce the threshold for identifying co-existing alopecias.
