TLDR Vitamin D3 analogues can improve hair growth in people with alopecia areata.
This study investigated the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and alopecia areata (AA), as well as the effectiveness of Vitamin D3 analogues in treating AA. Conducted as a randomized control trial with 100 participants, the study found that 69% of patients had low serum Vitamin D levels. All participants were treated with topical calcipotriol (0.005%) for 6 months. The severity of AA, measured by the SALT score, improved significantly from a mean of 20.7 at baseline to 9.4 after treatment. Overall, 71% of patients showed improvement, indicating that Vitamin D3 analogues are effective in enhancing hair growth in AA patients.
