TLDR The doxazosin plus tamsulosin combination improved symptoms effectively with fewer side effects.
The study compared the efficacy and safety of different alpha-blocker combinations in 374 hypertensive male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) unresponsive to 4 mg doxazosin. Patients were divided into three groups: increased doxazosin dose (D group), doxazosin plus tamsulosin (DT group), and doxazosin plus finasteride (DF group). After 12 months, the D and DT groups showed greater improvement in symptom scores and flow rates compared to the DF group. The D group experienced more significant blood pressure reductions and higher vasodilatory adverse events, while the DF group had more sexual function adverse events. The DT group had comparable efficacy to the D group but with fewer vasodilatory side effects, making it a potentially preferable option for managing LUTS in hypertensive patients.
