Amino Acid Compositions of Human Hair Fibrous Protein Components Purified with Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis

TLDR Human hair proteins have similar cysteine and glycine levels to skin proteins.
The study conducted by Satoshi Dekio and Joji Jidoi examined the amino acid compositions of normal human S-carboxymethylated (SCM) hair fibrous protein (HFP) components using two-dimensional electrophoresis. It was found that the SCM cysteine and glycine contents in crude HFPs were notably high and low, respectively, compared to stratum corneum fibrous proteins (SCFPs). However, after purification, the SCM HFP components showed cysteine and glycine levels similar to those of SCFPs. This indicated that fibrous protein components in normal human hair have amino acid compositions akin to those found in the stratum corneum.
