TLDR Many young women in Pakistan are unaware of their PCOS symptoms.
The study explored the knowledge and awareness of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) among female university students in Pakistan, where the prevalence of PCOS exceeded 50%. It found that 20% of the 100 participants had PCOS but were unaware of their symptoms. Despite 48% of respondents believing they did not have PCOS, their symptoms suggested otherwise. The study revealed that 53.9% of participants experienced irregular periods, and 45% faced weight gain. Additionally, 39.2% reported increased cravings. The research highlighted a lack of awareness about PCOS symptoms among adolescent girls, whose diets often included junk food and beverages, potentially affecting their menstrual cycles.
