Androgen-Related Disorders and Hormone Therapy for Patients with Keloids

Keloids, a fibroproliferative skin disorder, were suggested to be influenced by systemic endocrine factors, particularly male hormones or androgens. While previous research focused on female hormones, this review highlighted the potential role of androgens in keloid development through mechanisms like sebum-associated hypersensitivity and acne-related skin lesions, leading to chronic inflammation. In vitro studies supported this by showing elevated androgen levels and receptors in keloid tissues. Additionally, patients with keloids who received anti-androgen treatments for other conditions experienced relief from symptoms like pain and itching. The study proposed that androgen-related disorders played a critical role in keloid pathogenesis, and systemic hormone-targeting treatments might offer long-term benefits for patients with multiple keloids.
