Wiktoria J Auguścik, Katarzyna Bielawska, Aleksandra Tlak
TLDR Effective treatments for hair loss include minoxidil, 5α-reductase inhibitors, and personalized combination therapies.
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent form of hair loss due to hair follicles' sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), affecting both men and women. This review highlights current and emerging treatments for AGA, emphasizing that minoxidil (both topical and oral) and 5α-reductase inhibitors are the most effective. Additional therapies like platelet-rich plasma, microneedling, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and spironolactone can improve outcomes. For advanced AGA, hair transplantation is recommended. The review concludes that AGA treatment should be personalized, involve combination therapies, and require long-term monitoring, with regenerative methods offering new treatment possibilities.
