TLDR Alopecia areata may be linked to changes in body fat but not to heart or artery issues.
This study compared 50 alopecia areata (AA) patients with 50 healthy controls to assess cardiovascular risk markers. It found no significant differences in anthropometric measurements or arterial stiffness between the groups, but AA patients had a lower heart rate. Among AA patients, those with moderate-to-severe disease had lower body fat mass and visceral fat ratings compared to those with mild AA. The study suggests AA may be linked to changes in adiposity but not to increased arterial stiffness or ECG conduction issues. The clinical significance of these findings is uncertain, and larger studies are needed to explore the potential cardiovascular implications.
