Assessment of the Anti-Hair Loss Potential of Camellia Japonica Fruit Shell Extract In Vitro

    The study investigates the potential of Camellia japonica fruit shell extract (CJFSE) in mitigating hair loss. The research demonstrated that CJFSE promotes the proliferation of hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) and increases spheroid size. It upregulates the expression of VEGF-A, Wnt-1, c-Myc, and Cyclin D1, which are crucial for hair growth. CJFSE also inhibits 5α-reductase activity and counters the negative effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on cell proliferation, Dkk-1 secretion, and β-galactosidase activity. Additionally, CJFSE exhibits antioxidant properties by scavenging DPPH and reducing hydrogen peroxide-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The presence of gallic acid and protocatechuic acid in CJFSE was confirmed through HPLC analysis. Overall, CJFSE shows promise in alleviating hair loss by enhancing hair cell growth and reducing the impact of DHT and oxidative stress.
