TLDR Antihistamines may help with hair regrowth in alopecia areata, but dupilumab's effects are mixed.
This systematic review evaluated the use of antihistamines and dupilumab in treating alopecia areata (AA), involving 395 patients across 42 articles. Antihistamines, such as oxatomide, fexofenadine, and ebastine, were commonly used and reported significant hair regrowth and reduced symptoms like pruritus and erythema. Dupilumab showed mixed results, with some patients experiencing remarkable hair growth, while others saw no change or new hair loss. Additionally, dupilumab used for atopic dermatitis (AD) was linked to AA development in some cases. The review concluded that antihistamines show promise as adjunct treatments for AA, but further research is needed to explore their role as monotherapy and to better understand dupilumab's impact on AA.
