TLDR Hibiscus rosa-sinensis leaf extract is safe, has strong antioxidants, and effectively heals wounds.
The study evaluated the antioxidant, toxicological, and wound healing properties of ethanolic leaves extract of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. (ELEHR) using various experimental animal models. The extract demonstrated strong antioxidant activity in a concentration-dependent manner and showed a reasonable safety profile with no severe toxic effects. In wound healing assessments, ELEHR enhanced wound contraction and epithelization in excision and burn wound models, and increased wound breaking strength in the incision model. Histological analysis indicated restoration to normal skin architecture in treated wounds. The wound healing efficacy of ELEHR was attributed to its antioxidant properties and was supported by enhanced connective tissue markers in the dead space wound model.
