Interaction of Antiretroviral Medications with Finasteride

TLDR Antiretrovirals can affect finasteride's effectiveness, so dose adjustments may be needed for men on HIV treatment.
The study explored the interaction between antiretroviral medications and finasteride, a drug used to prevent hair loss, in 21 patients. Finasteride's efficacy could be influenced by antiretrovirals that affect the cytochrome p450 3A4 enzyme. Patients on protease inhibitors had lower DHT levels, while those on potent p450 inducers like efavirenz or etravirine had higher DHT levels, necessitating dose adjustments of finasteride. The study concluded that while interactions between antiretrovirals and finasteride were unlikely to be dangerous, they could impact the drug's effectiveness, suggesting that monitoring DHT/T levels and adjusting finasteride dosage might be necessary for HIV patients.
