TLDR Apoptotic cells help cause hair follicle cell death during regression.
The study investigates the process of hair follicle regression in live mice, highlighting the role of apoptotic cells in driving cell death. It reveals that epithelial cell elimination involves basal cell apoptosis and supra-basal cell differentiation, influenced by TGF-β and mesenchymal-epithelial interactions. The mesenchymal dermal papilla (DP) is crucial for initiating, but not completing, the regression cycle. The research suggests that apoptosis propagates through neighboring cells, slowing as it nears regenerative stem cells, which may emit a pro-survival signal. A proposed experiment aims to test this apoptosis propagation mechanism.
