TLDR Minoxidil and finasteride for hair loss may cause different types of heart rhythm issues.
The study investigates the cardiovascular safety profiles of minoxidil and finasteride, two common treatments for androgenetic alopecia, by analyzing arrhythmia-related adverse event reports from EudraVigilance. Minoxidil, originally an antihypertensive, is associated with 589 arrhythmia reports, predominantly supraventricular symptoms like tachycardia and palpitations, due to sympathetic activation. Finasteride, affecting androgen signaling, has 380 reports, with a higher proportion of ventricular events such as ventricular extrasystoles, particularly in male users. The findings highlight distinct arrhythmia phenotypes for each drug, suggesting the need for further mechanistic and prospective evaluations.
