Association of Serum IL-23 and IL-17 Levels with Alopecia Areata

A study conducted at Al-Diwaniya Teaching Hospital from December 2023 to April 2024 examined the association of serum interleukin-17 (IL-17) and interleukin-23 (IL-23) levels with alopecia areata, involving 40 patients with the condition and 40 healthy controls. The results showed that patients with alopecia areata had significantly higher levels of IL-17 and IL-23 compared to healthy controls, suggesting a potential role for these cytokines in the disease's pathophysiology. However, variations in IL-17 levels were not statistically significant concerning the duration of the illness, family history, or recurrence. The findings imply that dysregulation of these cytokines may exacerbate the autoimmune processes underlying alopecia areata.
