TLDR Atopic diseases worsen alopecia areata, leading to earlier onset and more severe forms.
This study examined 146 patients aged 5–18 with alopecia areata (AA) to determine the impact of comorbid atopic diseases on AA's clinical features. It found that 26% of patients had atopic conditions such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, or bronchial asthma. These patients experienced an earlier onset of AA and were more likely to develop severe forms, such as total and universal AA, compared to those without atopic diseases. The presence of atopy in AA patients is associated with a worse prognosis, indicating the need for personalized treatment strategies.
