TLDR Atopic dermatitis is linked to obesity, especially in severe cases.
The literature review by Alexander Gekhman explores the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), analyzing 11 studies. The review finds a consistent link between AD and obesity, especially in moderate-to-severe cases, suggesting the need for targeted metabolic screening in these patients. However, the associations with other MetS components such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia are inconsistent, indicating a need for further research. The study also highlights the influence of gender, ethnicity, and AD severity on MetS components, particularly obesity and hypertriglyceridemia. Both AD and MetS share a common pathophysiological pathway involving chronic inflammation and cytokines, which could be targeted in future treatments.
