This systematic literature review and meta-analysis examined the prevalence of autoimmune comorbidities among 10,246 US adults with vitiligo, revealing significant associations with thyroid diseases (14.2%), psoriasis (5.1%), rheumatoid arthritis (3.2%), and alopecia areata (2.7%). The study found high certainty of evidence for the association between vitiligo and thyroid disease and alopecia areata. It also noted that greater vitiligo extent correlates with increased prevalence of thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and pernicious anemia. Despite limitations due to the small number of high-quality studies, the findings underscore the importance of screening and early management of autoimmune comorbidities in vitiligo patients. Future longitudinal studies are recommended to explore causal links and potential benefits of early intervention.
