TLDR People with alopecia areata may have a higher risk of thyroid diseases.
This nationwide case-control study investigated the association between alopecia areata (AA) and autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) using data from Maccabi Healthcare Services in Israel. The study included 33,401 patients with AA and 66,802 matched controls. Results showed a significant association between AA and Hashimoto's disease (OR = 1.67) and Graves’ disease (OR = 1.68), with Hashimoto's disease preceding AA in 55% of cases and Graves’ disease in 75%. The findings align with previous studies, suggesting a shared genetic susceptibility between AA and AITD. Despite limitations, the study supports the significant link between AA and AITD, highlighting the need for further research on the clinical benefits of routine thyroid screening in AA patients.
