TLDR Baicalin may help treat severe drug-induced skin reactions.
The study investigates the effects of baicalin, a component of the herbal medicine Baikal skullcap, on inhibiting necroptosis in Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN). Necroptosis, a form of programmed cell death, is implicated in the pathogenesis of SJS/TEN. The research utilized TEN model cells, where baicalin's inhibitory activity was assessed by measuring phosphorylated RIP3 levels and caspase-3 activity. Results showed that increasing concentrations of baicalin led to a decrease in phosphorylated RIP3 and caspase-3 activity, indicating its potential to inhibit necroptosis. This suggests that baicalin could be effective in treating severe drug-induced skin eruptions.
