TLDR Barbed sutures improve surgical outcomes and efficiency but are limited by cost and strength issues.
The review discussed the evolution and clinical significance of barbed sutures, which were developed to overcome the limitations of conventional sutures, such as knot slippage and infection risks. Barbed sutures, featuring self-anchoring projections, reduced operative time and improved surgical outcomes, particularly in plastic, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgeries. Despite initial skepticism, their use expanded after FDA approval in 2005. Barbed sutures offered advantages like reduced stress relaxation, infection risk, and the need for knots, leading to more efficient procedures. They were beneficial in various surgeries, including "lunch-time" facelifts, laparoscopic, gynecological, and orthopedic procedures, providing better patient satisfaction and support for up to 16 months. However, higher costs and lower mechanical strength limited their widespread adoption, especially in orthopedic surgeries. Future research aimed to reduce costs and improve designs to enhance their use in surgical practices.
