TLDR Droplet microfluidics can precisely create microgels for advanced bioengineering uses.
The review discusses the use of droplet microfluidics in the fabrication of microgels, which are hydrogel particles with micrometer dimensions, highlighting their potential in bioengineering applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery. Droplet microfluidics allows precise control over the properties of microgels, including size, porosity, and modularity, enabling unique applications in analytical chemistry, cell culture, and drug delivery. The review also explores the assembly of microgels into jammed scaffolds for tissue engineering and biofabrication. Current limitations in microgel fabrication and characterization are addressed, and future research directions are suggested to enhance the field.
