TLDR Lower illness acceptance is linked to more body dysmorphic disorder symptoms in patients with body modifications.
This study examined 333 dermatology outpatients in Wrocław, Poland, revealing that 29.4% had body modifications, with tattoos and piercings more prevalent among younger females. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) symptoms were found in 15.9% of patients, but were significantly higher in those with tattoos (26.1%) and piercings (34%). A negative correlation was identified between illness acceptance and BDD symptoms, suggesting that lower illness acceptance is associated with increased BDD symptoms. The study underscores the need for psychological screening in dermatological settings to address mental health issues.
