TLDR Cancer patients in sub-Saharan Africa face significant challenges during chemotherapy, highlighting the need for better patient care and support.
This scoping review aims to map and synthesize existing evidence on the experiences of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in oncology facilities, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Chemotherapy, while effective, often leads to significant physical, psychological, and social challenges, including nausea, fatigue, hair loss, anxiety, and depression, which can affect patients' quality of life and treatment adherence. The review highlights the fragmented and heterogeneous nature of existing research on this topic, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive understanding of common themes and priority areas for improvement. By examining qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies, the review seeks to identify gaps in the literature and provide direction for future research to enhance patient-centered care and supportive interventions in resource-constrained settings.
