TLDR People with celiac disease have a higher risk of developing alopecia areata.
This multicenter case-control study investigated the association between celiac disease (CD) and alopecia areata (AA) using a large US database of approximately 64 million patients. The study identified 509,910 patients with CD and compared them to a control group of 622,747 patients. Results showed that patients with CD have an elevated risk of developing AA, with an odds ratio of 1.25 and a significant P-value of <.0001. The study suggests that shared genetic polymorphisms and elevated chemokines may explain this association. Despite limitations such as potential errors in data and focusing only on the US population, the large sample size supports the association between CD and AA. Further research is recommended to better understand the link between gut autoimmunity and hair follicle health.
