TLDR Cetirizine may help treat hair loss safely by reducing scalp inflammation.
Cetirizine, commonly used for allergies, has shown promise as a complementary treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) due to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. This systematic review highlights cetirizine's potential to prevent follicle miniaturization, a key process in AGA, by reducing local inflammation and modulating immune activity in the scalp. It effectively inhibits PGD2, which suppresses hair growth, and increases PGE2, which promotes it. Cetirizine is well-tolerated, with fewer side effects than minoxidil, and no specific side effects were reported by patients using it for AGA. This makes cetirizine a potentially safe treatment option for AGA and other related hair loss conditions.
