TLDR Women with lichen planopilaris and frontal fibrosing alopecia often have other health issues like hypothyroidism and lupus.
This retrospective cohort study at Columbia University Irving Medical Center analyzed 376 patients with lichen planopilaris (LPP) and frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), revealing a strong female predominance, with odds ratios of 1.99 for LPP and 8.60 for FFA. Patients with these conditions were more likely to have comorbidities such as hypothyroidism, psoriasis, systemic lupus erythematosus, vitiligo, and lichen planus, but were less likely to have diabetes mellitus. The study emphasized the need for larger prospective studies to explore these associations further and acknowledged limitations due to its retrospective design and reliance on ICD codes for assessing comorbidities.
